Olive Aschman
Born about 1843 in Pennsylvania. Wife of Robert M. McCowan, keeping the Allegheny Township household through the 1870 and 1880 censuses, and about forty when her last boy, Alan Clyde, was born. She died in 1896, when he was twelve, and is buried at Union Dale Cemetery as Olive A. McCowan. The 1940 death certificate of her daughter Erminie, as indexed, gives her maiden name as Aschman, a German name in German Pittsburgh.
Her own will points another way. It names two aunts, Mrs Eliza Eshelman and Mrs Hanna Benn, and both were born Ashworth, in a Pittsburgh family there by 1832. An English-born Samuel Ashworth was living in her household in 1880. So one of her parents was an Ashworth. Either Olive was born an Ashworth herself, or her mother was the Ashworth and her father an Aschman. The image of that certificate is the record that would settle it.
The families stayed close. In May 1892 her daughter Maud came home to Allegheny City from a visit to her cousin Alice Benn, a daughter of her aunt Hannah, at West Braddock.
