Albert Norris Rowell was born on 10 November 1872 in Mississippi. About 1901 he married Susie Sanders, eleven years younger, and their first son Farley was born in 1902. Nine more children followed over twenty three years: Clyde Livingston, George Barney, Oscar, David Hoyt, Mary, Annie Lois, Winfred, William R. and, last, Rowena.

In 1920 the census found the family at Smyrna, in Copiah County, Mississippi. Albert was 47 and Susie was 36. Farley, Clyde, Barney, Oscar, Hoyt, Mary, Annie and Winfred were living with them.

By the end of 1925 they were at Gloster, in Amite County. Rowena was born there on 19 December 1925. Albert died three days later, on 22 December, aged 53, leaving Susie with a newborn and a houseful of children. He was buried at Union Cemetery near Gloster. Susie was laid beside him in 1952 under a shared stone that reads "Father, Albert Norris, Nov 10 1872, Dec 22 1925" and "Mother, Susie Sanders, Apr 6 1883, July 24 1952," above the name ROWELL.
