Rowena Mavis Rowell was born on 19 December 1925 at Gloster, in Amite County, Mississippi. She was the youngest of the ten children of Albert Norris Rowell and Susan Laretta Sanders, who was called Susie. Her father died on 22 December 1925, three days after she was born. She grew up with her widowed mother and her older brothers and sisters, the eldest of whom had been born in 1902. They were Farley, Clyde, George Barney, Oscar, David Hoyt, Mary, Annie Lois, Winfred, called Windy, and William. She went by Mavis and by Rena.

She married Loyd Travis of Lucien, in Franklin County, the county just north of Amite. Their first son, Robert Wayne Travis, was born on 25 January 1944 when she was eighteen. William Lloyd followed in 1947, and later Dennis Michael and Jimmy Dale. Her son David Norris, called Butch, carried the Rowell name. Her own father's middle name had been Norris.

By the late 1940s Rowena's mother had moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. When Susie Rowell died there in July 1952, her obituary named "Mrs. Rowena Travis" among her three daughters. Rowena and Loyd made their home in Baton Rouge too.

Rowena died on Monday, 19 May 1980, at a hospital in Baton Rouge. She was fifty-four. She was living at 433 West Drive, apartment 10. Visitors called at the Rabenhorst Funeral Home on Government Street on the Friday evening, and a service was held there at nine the next morning. She was then taken back to Amite County and buried at eleven in the Union Cemetery at Gloster, where her parents lie.

Her notice was printed in the Baton Rouge Morning Advocate on 23 May 1980. It named her husband, Lloyd Travis of Baton Rouge, and her five sons. Robert W. Travis was in El Paso, Texas. William L. and Dennis M. Travis were both in Baton Rouge, Jimmy D. Travis was in Houston, and David N. Rowell was in Lafayette. Two of her brothers were living, William R. Rowell of Baton Rouge and David H. Rowell of Vidalia, and one sister, Anne, the wife of J. G. DeLaney of Vidalia. Her stone reads "In loving memory, Rowena R. Travis, Dec 19 1925, May 19 1980."
