Alexander Brooks Chase
Alexander Brooks Chase was born on 3 August 1824, the son of Nehemiah Chase and Delilah Cahoon. His birth is placed at Dennis in one account; his death return says Harwich, the town his parents also came from.
On 10 October 1846, at Dennis, he married Tabitha E. Howland. He was twenty-two and she was not yet seventeen. Their daughter Ann Eliza, called Annie, was born at Dennis on 16 May 1847, and sons Joshua A. and Reverrado A. are named in later Massachusetts records as his and Tabitha's. The family lived at Harwich in 1860 and 1865, and in 1880 Alexander and Tabitha were still there with children at home.
Tabitha died at Harwich on 30 December 1880. Alexander lived another twenty-eight years. At the end he was in the Harwich almshouse, the town's poor farm, where old people without means were boarded at public expense. He died there on 24 May 1909, at eighty-five, of what the medical examiner called indigestion and a heart spasm, each lasting a few minutes. He was buried two days later at North Harwich Cemetery, beside Tabitha. His daughter Annie had died at South Yarmouth six months before him.
