Alford Sanderson
Alford Sanderson farmed rented ground in Wayne County, Tennessee through the middle of the nineteenth century. The 1850 census finds him at 29 with his wife Emily, 32, and six children, the eldest twelve, so the couple had married by about 1837. In 1860 the family was in District 16, near Waynesboro: Alford 40, Elmyra 42, and seven children at home, with Adaline, five, the youngest. No census taker ever wrote a figure in his real estate column. In 1860 his whole personal estate was set down at 150 dollars, and in 1870 at 213.
By 1870 the household had moved to District 4, and his grown son Francis farmed the next household on the page. Alford was 50 and Elmira 52, with five children still at home: Matilda 25, Nancy C. 19, Reuben 15, Adeline 13 and J. H., nine. The 1870 return gives his birthplace as Mississippi where the two earlier censuses had said Tennessee, and the records do not settle which is right.
That June page is the last known record of him. Neither he nor Elmira appears in the 1880 census of Tennessee, and Wayne County kept no death register in those years. Between the two censuses his daughters married the Boyd brothers: Nancy C. to Joseph T. Boyd in December 1871, and Adaline to Eli T. Boyd in March 1874.
