Adeline Sanderson
Adeline Boyd was born in Tennessee about 1855, a daughter of Alford Sanderson, a renter farmer of Wayne County, and his wife Elmira. The 1860 census shows her at five, written Adaline, in her father's District 16 household near Waynesboro, and the 1870 census at thirteen in District 4. She is the only Adaline in any Sanderson household of the county in either census, and the family she raised repeats her family's names.
On 29 March 1874 she married Eli T. Boyd in Wayne County, seventeen weeks short of nineteen if her memorial's year is right. Her elder sister Nancy C. had married Eli's brother Joseph T. Boyd twenty-seven months earlier, so two Sanderson sisters were wives of two Boyd brothers, and the census of June 1880 shows the two households farming side by side in Civil District 1. Adeline's page holds her husband, three children and a hired boy; one of them was a daughter named Elmira, for her mother. The 1900 census shows her at forty-five at dwelling 48 in Civil District 1 with five children at home, written Adline; the 1910 census writes her Adoline S.
Widowed on 30 July 1922, she was pensioned as a Union soldier's widow on Eli's service: certificate 928,023, thirty dollars a month from 28 August 1922, raised to forty in March 1930. The payment card that tracked the money is also the record of her death. She died on 4 December 1930, and the bureau was notified two weeks later. Her memorial at Tole Cemetery says 1927, three years early, and the pension office, which was still raising her rate in the spring of 1930, is believed over the stone. No Tennessee death certificate for her is in the state's index, so the card is the only record of her death.
