Alfred Carlisle
Alfred Carlisle was born about 1828 in Hardin County, Kentucky, at or near Colesburg. The 1850 census shows him at about nineteen in the household of William Carlisle, a Colesburg farmer only six years his senior, likely an elder brother; his own parents are not known.
In the spring of 1853 he married Mary Dugan, about sixteen, in Hardin County. Nine children followed over twenty years: Sarah Frances, Elizabeth, James William, Henry, John Morgan, Nancy Ann, Hillery, Lou Ellen and Joseph. Mary died in the 1870s, and by 1880 Alfred, then about fifty, had married Rosa, a woman of twenty four, recorded in the compiled accounts as Rose Ellen Booth. The 1880 census shows the blended Colesburg household: Alfred and Rosa, and six of his children still at home, Nancy, fifteen, among them.
Sometime in the following years the family went west to the Missouri bootheel. Nancy was a woman of Charleston by January 1888, when she married George Fox; a Carlisle household was farming Tywappity in 1900. Alfred died at Charleston on 23 October 1900, aged about seventy two, and was buried in Calvary Cemetery, the Catholic ground where his daughter's family would be buried around him for the next seventy five years. He does not appear in the June 1900 census index, four months before his death, and Missouri kept no death certificates until 1910, so the stone at Calvary is the record of his end.
