Nancy Ann Carlisle
Nancy Ann Carlisle was born 16 June 1865 at Colesburg, a crossroads village in Hardin County, Kentucky, the sixth of the nine children of Alfred Carlisle and Mary Dugan. Her mother died when Nancy was about eleven, and her father remarried a woman young enough to be his daughter. Sometime in the 1880s the family left Kentucky for the Missouri bootheel, and by January 1888 Nancy was of Charleston, Mississippi County, when she and George W. Fox, a Tywappity Township farmer's son, crossed the river and married in Alexander County, Illinois, on the tenth of that month. Their first child, Birdie, was born in September 1889, and the 1900 census shows the couple farming south of Charleston with Birdie, Ruby, Edgar William and George T. at home.
George died 5 August 1909, five months before Missouri began keeping death certificates. From 1910 Nancy appears at the head of her own household in Tywappity, that year with Edgar, Ruby and George at home, in the same enumeration district where her newly married daughter Birdie kept house with James Arthur Brown. In 1920 she was still in the township, at dwelling 69, on her own. Her father had followed his children to Charleston and died there in October 1900; he lies at Calvary, as her husband does.
She died of cardio-renal disease with hypertension on 4 January 1939 at Wyatt, in Ohio Township, where her widowed daughter Birdie's family lived. She was seventy-three. The informant was her son E. W. Fox, by then living at Mound City, Illinois, across the river. She was buried the next day in Calvary Cemetery at Charleston, beside George, in the ground that already held her father and her son-in-law and would later hold Birdie.
