Alfred Williams Knowles
Alfred Williams Knowles was born on 21 March 1922 at Brookfield, a hill town in Orange County, Vermont. He was the son of Herbert William Knowles, a farmer born at Rockburn in Quebec, and Gladys Loella Williams, a Brookfield girl. His middle name was his mother's maiden name.
He grew up on the Brookfield farms with a crowd of brothers and sisters. In 1930 the census taker listed him in his father's house with his brothers Arthur and Gerald. By 1940 the house also held Zita, Ramona and Leon.
On 22 June 1940, three months past his eighteenth birthday, Alfred married Hazel Mildred Bussino at Brookfield. Hazel was also eighteen. She had been born at Rutland, the daughter of Will Bussino, a laborer of French-Canadian family, and Louise Raymond of Clarendon. Her family had moved to Brookfield, and her residence on the card is Brookfield too. The Rev. Carl Vose Woodbury, the Congregational minister from Northfield, married them, and the town clerk, Mary W. Harford, filed the return.
The couple settled near Barre, the granite city in Washington County. Their first child, Joan Marie, was born at Barre on 3 June 1941, less than a year after the wedding. Three more daughters followed, Jeanne Louise, Joyce Gloria and Judith Helene, and a son, Alfred Charles, born at Barre on 1 September 1951.
The marriage did not last. When Alfred died his wife was Pearl, and Hazel later carried the surname Clark.
Alfred died on 13 February 1979 at Berlin, Washington County, at fifty-six. He was then living at Williamstown, the next town south of Barre. He was buried at Brookfield Cemetery in the town where he was born. He shares a pink granite stone there with Pearl, carved with a barn and farmhouse under a hill and a stand of trees. His daughter Joan, who died in 2007, was buried at Brookfield as well.
