Gladys Loella Williams
Gladys Loella Williams was born about 1902 in Vermont, the daughter of Bert Williams and his wife Rosa. In 1910 she was living with them at Brookfield, Orange County, where her father farmed.
On 9 June 1920 she married Herbert William Knowles, a twenty-one-year-old farmer from Rockburn, Quebec, at Brookfield. The Congregational minister of Brookfield, the Rev. James S. Clark, married them.
Gladys and Herbert raised a large family. Their son Alfred Williams Knowles, born on 21 March 1922, carried her maiden name as his middle name. Arthur, Gerald, Zita, Ramona, Leon and Ivan were among the others. Her name appears as Gladys Luella on several of the children's records.
By 1950 she was no longer living with Herbert. That April he and two of their children were in her parents' house at Brookfield, and she was not. She later married Donald W. Garfield, a Vermonter. He died on 25 January 1972 at North Augusta, South Carolina, across the Savannah River from Augusta, Georgia. His obituary named his wife, Mrs. Gladys Williams Garfield, and her sons Alfred, Arthur, Gerald and Leon Knowles and daughters Elsie M. Hirth, Ramona Hardacker, Gladys McNeil and Zita Champney.
