Alice Kilham
Alice was the wife of Austin Kilham. Her maiden name is not proved. When the port officers at Great Yarmouth examined the passengers of the Mary Anne on 11 May 1637, they wrote her down as "Alles his wife ageed 40 yeares," so she was born about 1597. Austin and Alice had at least seven children, the eldest, Daniel, baptized at Dennington in Suffolk in 1620. Elizabeth, John, Mary and Ruth were also born in England.
The family went first to Salem. At Dedham the town clerk recorded the birth of her son Lot, "the Son of Austen & Alice Kulem," on 11 September 1640. Her daughter Sarah was born about the same time. In 1649 she and Austin moved to Wenham and joined its church, after the members had examined them.
Austin died on 5 June 1667 and left her nearly everything for her life, with the house and land to go to Lot. She was ill herself within the month. On 3 July she made her own will, "being under the aflicting hand of god & not knowing how soone god may put a period to my dayes upon Earth." She died on 18 July 1667.
Her inventory is mostly clothing. It lists an English serge gown, valued at three pounds, a French serge gown, a serge hood, a cotton waistcoat, an under coat, a white apron, a neck handkerchief, a stuff coat, a pair of cotton sleeves, two spoons, a carpet cloth and the corn standing in the field. The whole came to nine pounds eight shillings, and her debts to more than ten pounds.
