Alice Whitbread
Alice Whitbread was born about 1578, probably at Upper Gravenhurst in Bedfordshire, a daughter of John Whitbread and his wife Eleanor. The Upper Gravenhurst register of those years does not name the parents at baptisms. Her place in the family rests on her marriage, on her children's names, and on her mother's will.
On 10 November 1600 she married Gerard Spencer of Stotfold at Upper Gravenhurst. They had nine children baptised at Stotfold between 1601 and 1614: William, Elizabeth, John, Henry, Thomas, Richard, a son who died unnamed, Michael and Gerard. Henry and Richard died as small boys.
Her mother remembered two of Alice's sons in her spoken will, proved in 1629. William, her godson, got a silver spoon. Thomas got forty six shillings and eightpence. In 1611 Alice's husband and her brother William Whitbread sold a large spread of land together in the parishes around Gravenhurst.
Four of her sons, William, Thomas, Michael and Gerard, went to New England. When and where Alice died is not recorded.
