Eleanor Whitbread
Eleanor was the wife of John Whitbread of Upper Gravenhurst in Bedfordshire, who died in 1598. Her maiden name is not known. She was connected in some way with the Radcliffes of Elstow. On 1 August 1611 Sir Edward Radcliffe of Elstow sold a house there to John Radwell of Kempston and gave assurance against any claim from his late mother, Dame Isabel Radcliffe. On the same day Eleanor's son John Whitbread, a husbandman of Elstow, gave the same buyer assurance against any claim from his own mother, "Elner Whitbread of Eluestowe."
She bore John Whitbread at least four children who are certainly theirs, William, Henry, Alice and John, and probably three more. Alice married Gerard Spencer of Stotfold in 1600.
In her last years she lived at Elstow, probably with her youngest son John. She was buried at Upper Gravenhurst on 20 November 1628, probably near her husband. Her will was spoken, not written, and was proved on 18 April 1629.
