Allen Perkins
Allen Perkins was born in Massachusetts on 3 November 1820, to a Topsfield, Essex County Perkins family, and lived and died in Lewis County, New York. His father Aaron places the family in Essex County; his mother, Sally Perkins of Wenham, is documented by the Wenham vital records and by the 1850 Greig census, which finds his parents living two doors from him.
More than fifty years before he died he married Amanda Brown, and they settled at Greig and made their home there for the rest of their lives. He kept a farm and a store two miles outside the village. He and his son Alfred enlisted in the same company of the 186th New York in the last year of the war. For several years afterward he belonged to the Masonic order at Turin.
His health had been poor for several years. On Thursday 4 February 1897 he walked the two miles from his home to the village and back, and the next morning he died suddenly, aged seventy six. A large delegation of Masons came to his funeral at Greig on the Monday. He is buried in Emerson Cemetery, Greig, under a stone that gives his company and regiment. His widow and seven children survived him, and the farm and store were sold the next year.
