Alphonse Emilio Grossi
Alphonse Emilio Grossi was born at Farmington, Connecticut, on 20 November 1912, nine months after his parents' wedding. His father, Luigi Grossi, had come from Lenola in Italy and had taken out his first naturalization papers in Hartford the year before. His mother was Immacolata Cibelli. He was named for his grandfather, Alfonso Grossi of Lenola. Brothers and sisters followed: Frank, Mary, Sarah (Sally), Emma, John, Richard and Albert.
In 1930, aged seventeen, he was away from home, living and working as an employee in a large Hartford household headed by John L. Prendergast, a Massachusetts man of 48, with some thirty other residents and staff from Ireland, Canada, France and New England. By 1935 he was married to Mary Laviero, a Connecticut girl two years older than he was. Their son Louis was born at Hartford in December 1934 and their daughter Diane in 1939 or 1940. The 1940 census found them in Ward 12 of Hartford in the same house they had lived in five years earlier, with his father Luigi, 53, and his sister Mary, 18, under the same roof.
When he registered for the draft on 16 October 1940 he was working for Morris Joseloff, and the registrar described him: five feet six, 190 pounds, brown eyes, brown hair, ruddy complexion. Two more daughters came, Mary Ann and Beatrice. His wife Mary died at Hartford on 13 January 1955, aged 43 or 44, and was buried at Mount St. Benedict Cemetery in Bloomfield. He married again, more than once: Ann, Elaine and Bernice were his wives after Mary, and John A. Carta became his stepson.
He was a gardener by trade. He was living at South Windsor in 1986 and at Hartford in 1996. He died at Hartford on 4 March 2001, aged 88, and was buried at Mount St. Benedict. He left his son Louis, his daughters Dianne Higgins, Maryann Pleva and Beatrice Kozlowski, his brothers Frank and Albert, and his sisters Mary Giannotti and Sally Gammer.
