Louis Grossi
Louis Joseph Grossi was born at Hartford, Connecticut, on 26 December 1934, the first child of Alphonse Emilio Grossi and Mary (Laviero) Grossi. His father was a Connecticut-born son of an immigrant from Lenola in Italy; his mother was Connecticut-born too. The census taker of 1940 found the family in Ward 12 of Hartford and wrote him down as Lewis, aged five, with his sister Diane, a baby, his parents, his grandfather Lewis Grossi, 53, born in Italy, and an eighteen-year-old aunt, Mary. His mother died in January 1955, when he was twenty.
He went to Bloomfield High School and graduated there. He served in the Army, where he qualified as a marksman. On 15 April 1961, aged 26 and living at Bloomfield, he married Ellen E. Waters of Hartford. A Roman Catholic priest performed the ceremony at Hartford. They had four daughters: Donna, Julia (born 1968), Nicola and Susan (born 1971).
Real estate was his trade for the rest of his working life, and he worked every side of it. He sold property, owned it, taught it and appraised it, and he worked for many years for the Real Estate Commission of the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. With Ellen he owned the Casino Cafe in Hartford. In retirement he became an avid flea marketeer, with a metal-detecting sidekick named Bobby and a circle of flea market and donut shop friends.
Ellen died in January 2017 at New Britain. By then he was living at Wethersfield. Their daughter Julia had died before her, in December 2015, and a grandson, A.J., had died young. Louis died at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford on 13 May 2020, aged 85. Services were put off because of the pandemic, and the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home of Wethersfield handled the arrangements. His resting place is Mount St. Benedict Cemetery in Bloomfield, where his mother and grandfather were buried. He left his three surviving daughters, eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Dianne Higgins and Mary Ann Pleva.
