Amanda R. Parrish
Amanda R. Parrish was born on 3 July 1861, in the first summer of the Civil War. Records spell her surname Parrish and Parris. She married Rufus Flaherty Adams in Roanoke County on 26 November 1891. She was 30 and he was 25.
Their children George Henry, Mary Agnes and Emma Frances were born in 1893, 1894 and 1896. A photograph from about 1895 shows Amanda seated on a hillside in a dark dress, holding the baby Mary in a lace bonnet, beside Rufus with George on his knee.
In January 1899 Rufus died of laudanum. The Salem Sentinel said he left "a wife and four children, who are said to be in destitute circumstances." Amanda was 37. She raised the children herself. George was five.
Twenty years later she stood for a family photograph behind her son George and his wife Mae Secrist, an old woman in a white blouse with her hand on Mae's shoulder. George, in a straw boater, holds his daughter Ruth on his knee, and Mae holds the baby Mary Frances. Both her daughters married St. Clairs.
Amanda R. Adams died at Troutville on 30 December 1929, at 68. Her death certificate gives her parents' names as "Overdis Paris" and Susie Simmons. She was buried beside Rufus in Martin Memorial Cemetery. Her stone reads AMANDA R. ADAMS, JULY 3, 1861, DEC. 30, 1929.
