George Henry Adams
George Henry Adams was born on 27 February 1893. His death certificate names his parents as Rufus Adams and Amanda Parrish. His father died in 1899, when George was six, and his mother raised him with his younger sisters Mary Agnes and Emma Frances. Both sisters married St. Clairs.
George married Mae Amanda Secrist, whose own mother was a St. Clair. They had three children: Ruth in 1917, Mary Frances on 29 April 1918, and Harvey Roland in 1922. The family lived in the Amsterdam district of Botetourt County, the farm country around Troutville, north of Roanoke. In 1930 George and Mae were there with Ruth, Mary and Harvey, and in 1940 with Mary Frances and Harvey still at home.
A strip of three small photographs shows George as a young man: bareheaded twice, looking straight at the camera in a jacket and tie, and once in a hat.
George Henry Adams died at his home on Route 1, Troutville, on Wednesday, 2 September 1959, at 66. The Fincastle Herald named his survivors: his wife, Mrs. Mae Secrist Adams; a son, H. R. Adams of Roanoke; two daughters, Mrs. Ruth A. Kelley and Mrs. Frances A. Burger of Route 1, Troutville; two sisters, Mrs. Mary St. Clair of Covington and Mrs. Emma St. Clair of Troutville; and two grandchildren. The Rev. Elbert M. Yeatts held the funeral at Rader Funeral Home on the Saturday, and George was buried in the St. Clair Cemetery on Route 1, Troutville. His stone there reads GEORGE H. ADAMS, FEB. 27, 1893, SEPT. 2, 1959, AT REST.
