Amanda Rhodes

Amanda Lorella Rhodes was born on February 28, 1859 at Boyds Mills, Wayne County, Pennsylvania. Her father William Henry Rhodes died on March 18, 1863 in a Civil War field hospital near Falmouth, Virginia, when she was four. Her mother Delilah Rose raised the family alone for six years and remarried in 1869.

On October 29, 1879 Amanda married John Richard Maudsley. In 1880 they were farming in Damascus Township, she 21 and he 25. By 1900 they had settled in Manchester Township near Lookout, and she lived there for the rest of her life. Her death certificate says she had been at Lookout fifty years.

At the 1900 census she was the mother of ten children, all ten living. Two more followed, John Harold in 1902 and Mildred in 1904, for twelve in all. Her eldest, Margaret, died in 1909 days after giving birth. Four of her sons served in the First World War. As the children scattered she went to see them. In August 1912 The Citizen reported that "Mrs. John R. Maudsley is visiting her son, Harry Maudsley, and wife at Binghamton, N. Y."

John died in 1934 and Amanda lived on at Lookout as a widow. She had been under a doctor's care since August 1928. She died of apoplexy, a stroke, on December 10, 1938, aged 79. Her youngest daughter Mildred gave the particulars for the certificate. Amanda was buried at Lookout on December 13, beside her husband.
