William Henry Rhodes
Born July 1824 under Pochuck Mountain in Orange County, New York. He enlisted at Catskill on 15 August 1862, aged 38, in Company F of the 120th New York Infantry, and died on 18 March 1863 in camp near Falmouth, Virginia, leaving Delilah with small children; his daughter Amanda, the future Maudsley matriarch, was four years old.
He very probably had three brothers. In 1850 and 1855 the town of Thompson in Sullivan County held three Rhodes men of his generation: John D., born about 1820, James H., born about 1822, and Jesse W., born about 1828. The 1855 state census gives John D. and James H. as born in Orange County, the county of William's own birth. Their years space out like one family's, with his July 1824 between them. No document names them as brothers, so the relationship is probable rather than proved.
James H. Rhodes married Ellen Rose, an older sister of Delilah, so two Rhodes brothers probably married two Rose sisters. William married Delilah at the Bethel Methodist Church in Sullivan County on 23 November 1852. By 1855 James and Ellen were living in the same house as her father, John Rose, in Thompson. Both families had come there from Orange County about 1846.
His parents are less certain. A family tree names them as Jesse R. Rhodes and Maria Bennett of Warwick, Orange County. A Jesse Rhodes did head a household at Warwick in 1830: a man and a woman in their thirties and four boys under fifteen, with no girls. That is the household the tree needs, and it supports Jesse without proving him. No record read names Maria Bennett.
