Andrew Jackson Sherman
Andrew Jackson Sherman was born on 19 January 1853 at Marksville, the seat of Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana, by his gravestone. In 1870 an Andrew Sherman, 14, was living in Avoyelles Parish in the household of a Sherman born about 1820, with Caroline, 19, and Georges, 17. A New York-born George Sherman, about 30, had been farming at Avoyelles since at least 1850, married to Rosalie Brouillette, and their son George Washington Sherman of Marksville named exactly those parents on his death record in 1942. Andrew was very probably another of their sons, but no record read names his parents.
He married Caroline Chatelain, a Marksville girl eight years younger than him. In June 1880 the census found them at Marksville: Andrew, a farmer, 24 by the census taker's reckoning, Caroline, 20, and their first child, Willy, a year old. Willy was Wiltz Sherman, born on 11 October 1879, who lived to be 96. Florestine followed in September 1881, George A. on 17 January 1884, and Izole in August 1886.
Andrew died at Marksville on 21 February 1888, aged 35. Caroline was then about five months pregnant, and their daughter Lelia was born that August. Caroline never remarried. She raised the five children at Marksville and was listed as a widow in every census from 1900 to 1930. When she died in 1942 she was buried with him in plot 2139 of Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery, under one marble stone carved SHERMAN, with his dates on one side, hers on the other, and a line beneath: "Earth has no sorrows that heaven cannot heal."
