George A. Sherman was born on 17 January 1884 in Louisiana, by his Social Security record; his 1942 draft registration at Marksville gives 27 January. He lived his whole life in and around Marksville, the seat of Avoyelles Parish on the Red River prairie, where the old French families of the parish, Bordelons among them, had farmed for two centuries.

On 22 January 1908 he married Cecile Bordelon in Avoyelles Parish. Their daughters followed: Sable Mary in February 1913, Narcille about 1916, Gladys about 1920, Georgette in 1921, Una Lee about 1926, and Rena, whose place in the order is not known. In 1930 the household in Police Jury Ward 2 was George, 46, Cecile, 42, and the five younger girls; Sable, 17, was still at home. By 1940 only Gladys, 20, and Una Lee, 14, remained, and in April 1950 George, 66, and Cecile, 62, were alone in Marksville. He registered for the draft in the fourth registration of 1942, the one for men born between 1877 and 1897.

He died in March 1966, aged 82, and was buried at Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Marksville under a grey granite stone that later took Cecile's name as well: "SHERMAN. GEORGE A. 1884-1966. CECILE B. 1888-1986. May they rest in peace."

He was the son of Andrew Jackson Sherman and Caroline Chatelain of Marksville. His father died in February 1888, when George was four, and his mother never remarried. In June 1900 George, 16, was living with her in Marksville town, with his sisters Florstine, Izole and Lilia; his older brother Wiltz had left home. In 1910, two years married, he and Cecile were in Ward 2 with their first child, Rena, and his widowed mother lived nearby. On his First World War draft registration in 1918 he gave his birth as 17 January 1885 and named Cecile Bordelan Sherman as his nearest relative; the clerk's reading of his first name is Antome, probably Antoine, the A. of George A.
