Andrew L. Waddell was born on 20 October 1886 in Virginia, the youngest of the large family of James W. Waddell and Mary M. Kerns. His mother was then about fifty by the family's reckoning. His brothers were J. Willie, Walter and George Waddell, and his sisters included Ida Craun, Lucille, born about 1885, and two who married a Hamilton of Keyser, West Virginia, and a Crossley of Ohio.

He married Carrie Virginia Grimes. Their children were Gibson, Mildred and Fred Albert, born on 28 April 1917. Carrie died at Rectortown on 18 December 1921 after a brief illness, and was buried at Middleburg, leaving "three young children, two boys and one girl." Her stone at Sharon Cemetery calls her his beloved wife.

Andrew made his living at Rectortown, a village in northern Fauquier County. He kept a garage and filling station there. In 1929 he advertised "Two New Texaco Pumps and Polite Service. Lunches." He also did work for the county roads, making road drags and repairing a road grader. He bred dogs and kept race horses.

On 17 February 1927 he married a widow, Mrs. Mary Grimes, at Hagerstown, Maryland. She was born Mary Warrener at Glencoe, Maryland, in 1897, the daughter of English parents, and brought two children of her own, Anna and Leslie Grimes. In November 1930 she went into the Winchester Memorial Hospital for an operation and died there, aged 33.

His mother lived with him in her last years. She died at his house on 4 August 1932, at 96 by her own count. Two months later his sister Lucille was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Washington.

Through the 1930s Andrew ran a horse named Braw Scott in the flat races at the horse shows of the Virginia hunt country. Braw Scott ran second in the mile in 1933 and third in the mile and a quarter in 1937.

Andrew died on 2 April 1938, aged 51, and was buried at Middleburg on the following Tuesday. Many people came from Rectortown. Wm. D. Hurlbut of Haymarket settled his estate. In October 1939 his son Fred, "youngest son of the late Andrew Waddell," married Elizabeth Carter, and that August Fred ran Braw Scott at the Berryville show himself.
