Fred Albert Waddell
Fred Albert Waddell was born on 28 April 1917 in Virginia. His parents were Andrew L. Waddell and Carrie Virginia Grimes. He was the youngest of three children; his brother was Gibson and his sister Mildred. His mother died in December 1921, when he was four. In 1927 his father married a widow, Mary Warrener Grimes, who brought two children of her own, and she died after an operation in November 1930, when Fred was thirteen. His father died in April 1938, when he was twenty. He spent his life in northern Virginia, in Fauquier County and the counties around it.
He grew up at Rectortown, where his father kept a garage and filling station, and in 1931 he was a Boy Scout in the Marshall troop. His grandmother Mary M. Waddell lived with the family until she died in 1932. His father raced a horse called Braw Scott at the hunt country shows. At the Berryville Horse Show in August 1939, the year after his father's death, Fred ran Braw Scott himself. The horse came third in the mile and an eighth on the first day and third again in the mile and a quarter on the second.
On Thursday 12 October 1939 he married Gertrude Elizabeth Carter at Berryville. She was born on 31 December 1913 and went by Elizabeth, and her parents were Ashby Carter and Sarah L. Carter of Rectortown. The Fauquier Democrat called him "youngest son of the late Andrew Waddell." Their children were Doris L., born about 1941, and twin sons, Douglas and Donald LeRoy, born on 3 June 1942 at Rectortown, Fauquier County.
On 18 May 1950 the census taker found the family in Scott district, Fauquier County, in a house on a farm on the left side of the road. Fred was 32 and had worked 48 hours the week before as a radio repairman at a retail radio store. Elizabeth was 36 and kept house. Doris was 9, and the twins were 7. A niece, Marilyn Furr, aged 15, lived with them.
When his son Donald married at Warrenton in 1961, the family still lived at Rectortown. The marriage certificate gives his father's name as Fredrick Allen Waddell.
Fred later moved east to Manassas Park in Prince William County and worked as a television repairman. His home was 118 Manassas Drive. He died as a patient at Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church, on 10 December 1979, aged 62. Elizabeth gave the details for his death certificate. Royston Funeral Home of Middleburg buried him. He was buried at Sharon Cemetery in Middleburg, Loudoun County. Elizabeth was buried beside him in 1981.
