Anna Butler was born on 27 August 1798 in Georgia. The date is cut on her gravestone, which gives her name as Anna Butler Walker, and the censuses of 1850 and 1860 both say she was born in Georgia. Her memorial calls her Anna Ruth Butler. Her parents are not known.

She married George Walker, a Tennessee man two years younger, before 1820. He became a Baptist preacher. Their children were born over about twenty years: West in November 1821, Glapha in November 1824, George W. in October 1828, Charlotte about 1832, Susan about 1836, Philip A. about 1837 and Rebecca Ann about 1842. Her memorial names John, Bashaba, Polly Ann and Nancy as well, ten in all. Glapha married Thomas R. Edgemon in Meigs County in 1842 and died in 1853, leaving young children.

On 3 September 1850 the assistant marshal for the Eastern District of Bledsoe County wrote her as Anah Walker, 51, born in Georgia, in her husband's house at dwelling 131. Charlotta, Philip A. and Rebecca A. were still at home. Next door lived Jesse Walker, 80, and Delila, 76.

By June 1860 the family was in the Fourth District of Sequatchie County, near Dunlap. On 18 June the census taker wrote her as Anna, 61, born in Georgia, and gave her occupation as midwife. Her husband was written as a clergyman. Her daughter Rebecca, 18, was at home, and so were Susan Robison, 24, and two children, George Roberson, 9, and Jane Arkanson, 6. Her memorial says she was a midwife as well as a mother and farmer.

Her husband died in December 1868. Anna died a month later, on 19 January 1869, aged 70. She is buried beside him in the Thans Chapel Cemetery at Dunlap, under one double stone with "Mother" cut beneath her side. Her son George named his second boy Warren Butler Walker in 1858, carrying her maiden name into the next generation.
