George W. Walker was born on 24 October 1828 in Tennessee, by his memorial. The 1860 census puts his birth about 1828, and the schedule of deaths taken in 1880 makes him 51 at his death in December 1879. His son's memorial and his own call him George W. Walker Jr.
His father was very probably George Walker, a Baptist preacher born in 1800, and his mother Anna Butler, a midwife born in Georgia in 1798. His memorial names them as his parents, and so does a lineage application approved in 2010. In June 1860 the two households stood four pages apart in the same Fourth District of Sequatchie County. Both men preached. And George named his second son Warren Butler Walker, which carries Anna's maiden name.
He married Frances Savage, called Frankie, about 1853. She was the daughter of Sterling King Savage, whose farm lay in District 4 of Grundy County. When the census taker came through the Fourth District of Sequatchie County on 16 June 1860, George was 32 and Frances was 32. Their sons Leroy, 6, and Warren B., 2, were at home, and George owned personal property worth $750. Sequatchie County had been cut out of Marion County only three years before, in 1857, along the valley of the Sequatchie River north of Chattanooga. Dunlap was its county seat and its post office.
More children followed: Martha about 1864, George W. about 1866 and Nancy about 1869. Like his father he preached as well as farmed. His memorial describes him as a farmer and a clergyman, and the census taker who listed the year's deaths in 1880 wrote "Farmer" with "& Minister" squeezed in above it.
George died in December 1879 of pneumonia, at 51. He was married, and the doctor who attended him was G. W. Lockhart. His memorial gives the date as 18 December 1879 at Dunlap. When the census taker came in June 1880, Frances, then 52, headed the household herself with Warren, Martha, George and Nancy. George is buried in the Savage Cemetery in Sequatchie County, the burying ground of his wife's family. In 1915 his son Warren's death certificate named him as Geo. Walker, born in Tennessee, and in 1935 his son George's named him as George W. Walker.
