Anna Esther Haight
Anna Esther Haight, called Annie, was born in 1878 in Clarion County, Pennsylvania, the second child of George Benjamin Haight and his second wife Mary Melissa Nulph. Her father was a Civil War soldier known along the river as "King of the Water Raftsmen on the Clarion." The census of June 1880 found the family in Mill Creek Township, Clarion County: George, 35, laborer, Mary M., 20, a half-sister Mary E., 14, from the first marriage, John W., 5, "Ester A.," 2, and George's widowed mother Eliza Platt Haight, 62. Five more children came after her: James Franklin, Eliza Jane, William George, Joseph Curtis and Harry Albert.
About 1894 she married Harry Robert Haight, a woods laborer six years older who was her second cousin through the Haight brothers Joel and Ambrose. Her son Benjamin Whitefield was born in December 1893, and six more children followed at Barnett Township in Forest County: Clara, Mabel, Julia, Ira, Clinton and, in 1916, Harry F. Her father died in February 1898, when she was about twenty, and her mother in 1906.
She and Harry lived at Barnett and later in Heath Township, Jefferson County. In April 1950 she was 72, keeping house for Harry, 80, and two grandsons. Harry died in October 1951. Annie Haight died in 1953 and is buried with him at Edeburn Hill Cemetery under a stone that reads Anna E. 1878-1953.
