Anne Olsdatter Bolkan
Anne Olsdatter was born on 26 February 1823 at Myhr in Skatval, the northern parish of Stjørdal in Nord-Trøndelag, and was baptised in the Stjørdal church on 30 March 1823. Her father, Ole Andersen, was an inderst at Myhr, a lodger who worked for others and held no land. Her mother was Gunnild Arntsdatter. Anne was confirmed at Skatvold on 1 October 1837.
Her father died at Myhr on 24 May 1824, when she was fifteen months old. Her mother stayed at Myhr, and on 25 June 1835 married Ole Olsen, a farmer's son from Hvalstad who farmed at Myhr. Anne grew up there with her mother and stepfather, and she was still living at Myhr when she married. Her mother died there in January 1855, the winter after Anne's son Kristoffer was born.
On 16 November 1848, at Værnes church in Stjørdal, she married Peter Christian Christophersen, a cottar's son from Bolkgjerdet two years younger than herself. They lived on cottar's plots under the Bolkan farm and then at Hvidhammermyren on the Kvithammer farm, and she bore at least six children between 1849 and 1863: Ole, Christoffer, Kristoffer, Johan Martin, Gustaf and Anne Petrine. One Christoffer died young and the name was given again.
On 7 April 1866 the family left Stjørdal for America. Anne was 43, the eldest boy 17, the youngest girl 2. They farmed in Rock County, Wisconsin, then in Brookfield Township, Worth County, Iowa, where her husband died in 1881. In America she was Anne or Anna Bolkan, and her Norwegian patronymic became the family's memory of her as Anna C. Olson.
After 1881 she lived with her youngest son Gustav near Kensett, Iowa, and was in his household in 1900. Then she went north to her eldest son. In 1910 she was in Ole P. Bolkan's house at Sverdrup Township, Griggs County, North Dakota, aged 88, with Ole's wife Mary and their children Gustavus and Angeline. She died there on 27 March 1911 and was buried at Ness Lutheran Cemetery near Cooperstown. Her stone reads, in Norwegian, Anne Bolkan, født 25 Feb 1823, døde 27 Marsh 1911. The parish register gives her birth one day later than the stone.
