Anne Spencer
Anne was the wife of John Spencer of Edworth in Bedfordshire, who was buried there in June 1558. Her maiden name is not certain. Her will names her "brother Edward" and remembers the barley given to her sons by the father of Nicholas and John Merryll, which suggests she was born a Merrill.
She was left a widow with three sons: Michael, born about 1530 to 1535; John; and Gerard, born about 1543. Her son John was buried at Edworth on 21 April 1560.
On 13 June 1560 she made her will as a widow of Edworth. To her son Gerard, then seventeen, she left his share. Michael was to have "the chest that was his brother John's." Michael's small son John was to have twenty pounds. Elisabeth Lymer was to have four pounds at her marriage, and Alice Aystin a calf. There were bequests to her servants and ten shillings for the mending of "London Brygge waye." Her brother Edward's children were to have the pound he had borrowed of her, and the barley he had given her sons. Nicholas Merryll and his brother John were to have the barley their father had given her sons. Michael witnessed the will.
She was buried at Edworth three days later, on 16 June 1560. The will was proved on 21 April 1561.
