Ancestors

Michael Spencer

Edworth, England
Father: John Spencer
Mother: Anne Spencer
Children include Gerard

Michael Spencer was born about 1530 to 1535, the eldest son of John Spencer of Edworth in Bedfordshire and his wife Anne. His father died in 1558. In June 1560 his mother made her will: he was to have "the chest that was his brother John's," and his son John was to have twenty pounds. Michael witnessed it. She was buried three days later.

On 20 January 1555/6 he married Agnes Limer at Edworth. She bore him John in 1557, Michael in 1558, who died at two, and Anne in 1560. Agnes was buried at Edworth on 23 February 1561/2.

About 1563 he married again. His second wife was Elizabeth, whose surname is not known. The children who followed were probably all hers: Joan in 1564, Alice in 1566, Catherine, who married a Bland, and Thomas in 1571. Between 1571 and 1576 the family moved from Edworth to the next parish, Stotfold. There Gerard was baptised on 20 May 1576 and Richard on 9 July 1580. The clerk named both parents at those two baptisms, "Mich-Eliz Spencer."

His younger brother Gerard, a yeoman of Biggleswade, died about 1577 and named Michael an executor of his will. Michael was still alive on 18 November 1599, when Elizabeth was buried at Stotfold as "Eliz w Mich Spencer." His son Richard became a prosperous haberdasher in London. His son Gerard's four sons went to New England.
