Annetje Barends
Annetje Barends was baptized in the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam on 2 November 1659. The clerk entered her parents as "Barent Joosten, Sytie Laurens" and the witnesses as Joost and Annetje Pieters. Her father was a horseman from East Frisia who settled at Bushwick and later at New Utrecht. Her younger brother and sisters, Joostje, Joost and Geertruyt, were baptized at Breuckelen between 1661 and 1664.
Barends means daughter of Barent, and she is also written Annetje Joosten, from her father's own name. On 29 May 1681 she married Pieter Strycker of Flatbush, sheriff of Kings County two years later.
Her son Jan was born in 1684. She also had sons Jacob, Barent, Peter and Hendrick, and daughters Zytie, who married Aris Vanderbilt, and Lumitie, who married Johanes Lott. Two of her sons were named Barent, her father's name, one in 1686 and one in 1690. Her daughter Zytie carried her mother's name.
She was mistress of the long, low brick house close upon the road at Flatbush, with "P.S. 1696" set into its front in colored brick. She died before April 1729, when Pieter made a will naming a wife called Aertie.
