Barent Joosten

Children include Annetje

Barent Joosten came from a place written "Witmont in Emberland," probably Wittmund in East Frisia. Bergen's register of Kings County settlers calls him "ridder," horseman or knight. He emigrated to New Netherland in 1652.

On 7 December 1658 he married Seytie Laurens of Long Island. Her name is also written Cytie, Eytie and Sytie. Their daughter Annetie was baptized in the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam on 2 November 1659. Three more children were baptized at Breuckelen: Joostje on 26 December 1661, Joost on 7 January 1663 and Geertruyt on 11 May 1664.

He settled at Bushwick in 1661 and was a magistrate there in 1663 and 1664. Under the Dutch a town's magistrates sat as its court.

On 6 April 1675 he and Jan Hansen Van Nordstrant bought 100 morgens of land from Francois de Bruynne. The land was part of Anthony Jansen from Salee's patent, in Gravesend and New Utrecht. A morgen was a Dutch measure of about two acres. They sold it on 11 December 1693 to Albert Coerten Van Voorhees.

He lived at New Utrecht from then on. He was on its assessment rolls in 1675, 1683 and 1693, and constable in 1683, 1686 and 1687. His name is on Governor Dongan's patent for the town in 1686. He took the oath of allegiance there in 1687, and he is on the census of 1698. He could not write, and made his mark "B. J." on documents.

His daughter Annetje married Pieter Strycker of Flatbush on 29 May 1681. Among her children were two sons named Barent and a daughter named Zytie.
