Anton Lehman

Seitingen, Kreis Tuttlingen, Württemberg
Children include Maria

Anton Lehman, written Josephus Antonius Lehmann in full, was the sacristan of the parish church at Seitingen, a Catholic village in the Tuttlingen country of Württemberg. The sacristan, the Mesner in German, looked after the church and served the priest at the altar.

He married Lutgard Kraus at Seitingen on 30 September 1722. The priest wrote: "Nuptias celebrarunt Honestus juvenis Antonius Lehmann et pudica virgo Lugardis Kraussin." He was a respectable young man marrying for the first time, and she was a chaste maiden. The witnesses were Fridolin Hör and Joseph Ilg, both of Seitingen. He was probably born before about 1700.

Their first child was baptised on 18 August 1723 and given his father's full name, Josephus Antonius. The godparents were Bonaventura Braun and Anna Maria Seyfrid. Six more children were baptised to the couple at Seitingen: Franciscus Ignatius in 1732, Anna in 1735, Maria Anna on 16 January 1738, Agatha in 1739, Margaretha in 1740 and Maria Elisabetha in 1742.

His father was probably Michael Lehmann of Seitingen. At the confirmation of October 1709 the Seitingen list enters "Joseph Antoni, Maria liberi Michel Lehmann", Joseph Anton and Maria, children of Michel Lehmann. A Michael Lehmann witnessed weddings at Seitingen in 1721 and 1722, once as "Michael Lehmann senior". The list names no mother, so the link is a likelihood and no more.

His office is known from his daughter Maria Anna's wedding. On 23 January 1759 she married Lukas Schrenk of Oberflacht, a widower, in the parish church. The priest entered her as "filia aeditui", the sacristan's daughter, and named the witnesses as "Joane Schrenck et aedituo", Joannes Schrenck and the sacristan.

A Josephus Antonius Lehmann was buried at Oberflacht after dying on 8 April 1762, which is probably him. Maria Anna lived until 1810, and her burial entry named him and Lutgard Kraus as her parents.
