Anton Lehmann
Anton Lehmann was born at Seitingen on 5 January 1745 and baptised the same day. The priest wrote "Antonius, filius Joannis Lehmann fabri et Barbarae Buetschlin": Anton, son of Johann Lehmann the smith and Barbara Buetschlin. Faber is Latin for smith. His godparents were Josephus Kraus and Maria Lehmännin, all of Seitingen.
He grew up in a full house. At the confirmation of 20 July 1747, five of the smith's children were confirmed together: Josephus, Joannes, Leopoldus, Christina and Benedictus. Anton was two and a half and too young to be among them.
He took up his father's trade. The Seitingen family register enters him as Bürger und Schmied, a burgher and smith, at house number 29. On 26 April 1767 he married Anna Braun of Hofen; a later hand has added 1768 in pencil. He was twenty-two. She was six and a half years older, born on 24 June 1738, the daughter of Jakob Braun, a weaver at Hofen. Hofen is probably the village of that name near Spaichingen, a few kilometres from Seitingen.
They had six children. Maria was born in January 1769 and Johann in February 1770. Barbara came on 29 October 1772, Anton in December 1775, Elisabeth in July 1778 and Joseph in June 1782. Johann married and had a household of his own in Seitingen. Elisabeth is marked dead. Against Joseph the page says "Aufenthalt unbekannt", whereabouts unknown.
Barbara married Johann Baptist Schrenk, a farmer of Oberflacht, on 3 August 1802. He died in October 1806 and she died on 11 December 1806, at thirty-four. She left a daughter, Maria Anna Schrenk, not yet four. Anna Braun died on 7 January 1808.
Anton lived twelve more years. He died at three in the morning on 20 May 1820, aged seventy-five. The cause the clerk wrote was "Entkräftung", loss of strength, the usual word for the wearing out of old age.
