Arthur Hommond
Arthur Raymond Hamman was born on 25 April 1918 in Pennsylvania. His parents, Earl Gerald Hamman and Laura Jane Booher, had married in June 1917 and lived in Huntingdon County. His middle name was the middle name of his mother's father, Bower Raymond Booher. The family called him Sonny. He had an older sister, Cora Jane, and two younger ones, Margaret and Estall Paul.
His mother died at the hospital in Huntingdon in September 1922, when Arthur was four and his brother Paul less than two months old. His grandmother Jennie Hamman took the baby and raised him. Five months later, in February 1923, his father married Mary Irene Hershey, and twelve more children followed.
Arthur went west to California. On 16 October 1940 he registered for the draft at Pittsburg, in Contra Costa County, east of San Francisco Bay. He was living on Route 1 with his uncle, Elmer Leroy Cupp, a contractor, and working for him. He gave his birthplace as Orbisonia, Pennsylvania, and his birth date as 25 April 1919, a year later than the date on his death record. The registrar described him as five feet nine and 157 pounds, with hazel eyes, brown hair and a ruddy complexion. The card was filled in with the name Hommond, and he signed it Arthur R. Hammond.
Within a few months he had married Lorraine Belville, who had grown up in Pittsburg, where her father worked at the steel works. In California the family name was written Hommond. Their first son, Lloyd, was born on 20 March 1941 and died the next day. Five more children followed: Wilda Jean, 10 March 1942, Wynema Jane, 29 September 1944, Wayne Jerome, 23 December 1945, Wanetta June, 29 March 1949, and Wyman Joseph, 29 June 1955.
Arthur served in the United States Army in World War II.
In April 1950 the census taker found the family in Contra Costa County. Arthur, 32, was a plasterer in the building trade. Lorraine was 28. Wilda was 8, Wynema 5, Wayne 4 and Wanetta 1.
Arthur died on 9 July 1980 in San Francisco County, aged 62. He is buried in Oak View Memorial Park at Antioch, in Contra Costa County. His flat bronze marker spells the name a third way: "ARTHUR R HAMMOND, US ARMY, WORLD WAR II, 1918, 1980."
