Arthur Stanley
Arthur Stanley was the father of Martha Jane Stanley, who was born about 1879 in Wyoming County, married Richard Scott Hammons in 1894 and died at Cordova in Greenbrier County on 5 June 1927. Her death certificate names him as her father and says he was born in West Virginia.
An Arthur Stanley, a farmer, died in the same district three years before her. He is almost certainly the same man. He lived at Leonard, in Falling Spring district, the district where Martha lived and died and where Scott Hammons was later buried. His certificate and hers were filed by the same registrar. He was born in 1854, so he was about 25 when Martha was born. No other Arthur Stanley died in Greenbrier County in those years.
In 1920 an Arthur Stanley born in 1854 was living in Greenbrier County with his wife Nancy J. and a son Henry M. That Arthur Stanley was a widower when he died. He had been treated by a doctor from Renick from 13 to 15 September 1924, and he died of blood poisoning on 17 September, aged 70. His certificate names his parents as John Stanley and Polly Buchanan, both born in West Virginia. G. A. Stanley of Richwood gave the details. He was buried at the McMillion Church on 19 September 1924, and J. A. Brown of Renick was the undertaker.
