Martha Jane Stanley
Martha Jane Stanley was born about 1879 in Wyoming County, in the southern coalfield of West Virginia, a daughter of Arthur Stanley. On 20 July 1894, at fifteen, she married Scott Hammond, 22, in Greenbrier County. W. R. Belcher performed the ceremony.
Her children were Jesse James, born at Cordova in 1896; Silas, born in Greenbrier County on 12 November 1899; Howard Hanley, born in 1902; Arvilla; Percilla Pearl, born in Webster County in 1908; and Orvil, born in 1912. The censuses of 1900, 1910 and 1920 record her as Martha J. Hammons, first at Webster Springs and then at Falling Spring in Greenbrier County. When Percilla married, the marriage return named Martha J. Hammons as the bride's mother.
She died at Cordova, in Falling Spring district, Greenbrier County, on 5 June 1927, aged 48, of tuberculosis of the lungs. No doctor attended her. Samuel Baldwin of Cordova gave the details for her certificate. He named her father, Arthur Stanley, born in West Virginia, did not know her mother, and wrote her name as Martha Jane Cutlip (Hammons), married. Where the Cutlip came from no record explains. Her husband married Mintie McMillion the next year, and his own death certificate in 1946 still named him as the widower of Martha Stanley Hammons.
