Aslak Knudsen

Aslak Knudsen, born in 1758 or 1759 and dead in 1834, who farmed at Joranstad, later written Jorumstad, in Holt parish behind Tvedestrand. He married Birte Olsdatter, born 1766 and dead 1833, and the parish history of Holt gives their family under the heading Aslak Knudsens slekt.

Six of their children can be named. Ole, born 1796, became a skipper and married Tore Oline Ellevsdatter at Holt in September 1822, both of them living at Joranstad at the time. Knud, born 1799, carried his grandfather's name. Then come four whose baptisms are in the Holt parish book: Birte in April 1801, Trohn in March 1803, Maren in December 1804 and Ingeborg Marie in August 1806. He buried a child in March 1806, and he was still assessed at Jorumstad in the silver tax of 1816.

He was born in neither Vestre Moland nor Holt. He came into Holt as a boy with his mother, a widow, and grew up in another man's house with two small half brothers, one of them named for the father he had lost. By twenty he was serving on a farm called Holte in Vestre Moland, a parish to the west, and he was living there when he came back to Holt in 1790 to marry Birthe of Langang.

The farm stayed with the family. Trohn, the son baptized in 1803, was head of the Jorumstad household in the census of 1865, entered as gaardbruger, selveier and skipperborger, owner occupier and shipping burgher, with a wife, five children and two servants under the roof.
