Babette Stumvoll
Babette Stumvoll was born at two in the morning on 18 August 1880 and baptized the same morning, at a quarter to ten. The baptism register of Viechtach, in the Bavarian Forest, writes her as Barbara Stubenvoll. Babette is the familiar form of Barbara, and Stumvoll is the shortened form of Stubenvoll. Her father, Michael, was a locksmith, and the register gives the family's place as Kötzting, a market town a few miles north of Viechtach. Her mother was Crescenz Brunner. Her obituary gives the year of her birth as 1881 and spells her father's name Stumfoll. In America she went by Betty.
On 14 October 1904, at Nuremberg, she married Erhard Wallner, a young jeweler. Their son Erhart was born in December 1903. Agnes followed in 1905, Julius in 1908 and Anna in 1912.
In 1913 Erhard went to Reno, Nevada, to work in a friend's jewelry business. Babette stayed at Viechtach in the Bavarian Forest with the four children, near her two brothers. The First World War broke out the next year, and the family did not see Erhard again for seven years.
In September 1920 Babette sailed from Bremen on the Susquehanna. She was forty, married, and living at Viechtach. As her nearest relative left behind she named her mother, Mrs. Crescenz Stumvoll. As the person she was going to she named her husband, Erhard Wallner. She landed at Ellis Island on 18 September 1920.
In Reno she had one more child, Babette Lina, born in June 1922. The baby died the following January. The family lived first on Center Street and then at 36 Martin Street, where they later made apartments of the house. In 1940 Babette and Erhard were living alone in Reno's first ward.
After Erhard died in 1962, Betty lived on in Reno. She died in a Reno hospital on 30 January 1969, aged 88. The Reno paper wrote that she had come to Reno 47 years earlier from Bavaria. She was survived by her sons Julius Wallner of Reno and John Wallner of Redding, her daughters Agnes McCarthy of Reno and Ann Frey of North Lake Tahoe, seven grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. The Rev. Edward A. Wessel led her funeral at Ross, Burke and Knobel Mortuary. She is buried beside Erhard in Mountain View Cemetery, in a grave with no marker of her own.
