Barbara Raulerson
Barbara Bradshaw was born in North Carolina in 1844 or 1845. Her parents were Dickson G. H. Bradshaw and his wife Elizabeth, called Betsy. Her grave memorial in Seville Cemetery reads in part "W/O ROBERT R., D/O DICKSON G. & ELIZABETH WHITMAN BRADSHAW."
In 1850 she was 5 and living with her parents at Duplin Roads, in Duplin County, North Carolina, with her brother James B. and her sisters Nancy, Rebecca and Elizabeth. In the early 1850s the family moved to Florida, and her father took up public land in 1852. By 1860 they were in Volusia County, where Barbara, 16, lived with her parents, her brother Enoch and her sisters.
In 1866 she married Robert Rowan Raulerson. They farmed at Seville, in the northwest of Volusia County. Six sons are linked to them: William David, Robert Dixon, Jacob James, Stephen Franklin, Burton Bryan and George Washington Raulerson, born between 1867 and 1884, and the 1880 census also lists a daughter, Bertie, one year old. Her husband died in 1898, and she outlived him by twenty-six years.
Barbara Raulerson died at Seville on 23 November 1924, aged about 80, a widow. Her death certificate gives her time in that place as 70 years, which carries her back to the family's first years in Florida. It names her father as D. G. H. Bradshaw of North Carolina; the line for her mother repeats her own name in error. Her son D. R. Raulerson, Robert Dixon, gave the details. She was buried at Seville the next day under a marble stone reading "Having finished life's duty, She now sweetly rests."
In 1909, eleven years a widow, Barbara applied to the State of Florida for a Confederate widow's pension. The federal government paid no pensions to Confederate soldiers or their widows, so the former Confederate states paid their own from state funds. Her claim rested on her husband's service, and it failed on the last year of it. Robert had gone home on furlough in 1864 and was still at home when the war ended. The War Department in Washington could not find him on the rolls, and on 4 August 1909 the State Board of Pensions wrote that her claim was not allowed.
