Benjamin Coe
Benjamin Coe was born at Jamaica, on Long Island, about 1660. He was evidently the one male over age in his father's household on the Jamaica tax rate of 1683, and as eldest son he was heir to his father's estates. On 19 May 1699 he bought a lot of land in Jamaica from Benjamin Thurston.
He married twice. The name of his first wife, married about 1684, is not known. She may have been a daughter of Major Daniel Whitehead by his first wife, Abigail Stevenson. Their sons were Daniel, born about 1685, and John, born about 1687, who went to Hopewell in New Jersey. About 1700 he married Mary Everett, a daughter of Nicholas Everitt of Jamaica. Their son Benjamin was born on 4 April 1702.
He died about 1707. On 4 February 1708/9 "Widow Coe" was on the rate for Jamaica, taxed 3 shillings and 6 pence. The inventory of his estate came to £84 6s. 6d. and was presented on 28 March 1710. His widow married Deacon James Wheeler and moved to Newark with her son.
His own father is given in a family history of 1911 as Benjamin Coe, son of Robert Coe, the Puritan who was born in 1596, though no record of the time names Benjamin's children.
