Benjamin Coe
Benjamin Coe was born at Jamaica, on Long Island, on 4 April 1702, by a family record kept by his descendants. His father, also Benjamin Coe, died about 1707. His mother, Mary Everett, then married Deacon James Wheeler and moved to Newark, New Jersey, taking the boy with her.
He came of age in 1723. On 19 June that year his father's lands at Jamaica were divided, and he took the west half as "heire of Benjamin Coe late of Jamaica." He sold it straight away. On 23 October 1723 he paid John Ward £171 for six acres in Newark, on the south side of Court Street, running from High Street to Washington Street. He settled on that homestead, and most of it stayed in his descendants' hands until 1900.
He was a farmer and a tailor, and he held various town offices in Newark.
He married first Abigail, born in February 1708, the mother of all his children. Mary, the eldest, was born on 10 November 1726, Sarah on 13 October 1728, Daniel on 28 September 1731, Eunice on 11 May 1733, Benjamin on 28 December 1738, and Abigail on 8 May 1742. His wife Abigail died on 4 December 1761. On 19 January 1766 he married Mary Young, a widow, at the old Dutch church in New York City. His third wife was Rachel, born about 1709, who died in 1779.
He made his will on 30 April 1783. He left lands he had bought of Hezekiah Johnson, Silas Halsey, Joseph Jones and Joseph Webb to "his four daughters, Mary Roberts, Sarah Tuttle, Vinie Baldwin, and Abigail Tichenor," and the rest to his son Benjamin. His executors were his sons-in-law Moses Roberts, David Tuttle, Joseph Baldwin and Daniel Tichenor. He died at Newark on 21 December 1788, and the will was probated on 25 June 1789.
