Benjamin Haight Jr.
Benjamin Haight was born on 24 December 1769 in New York, a son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Haight; the older generations of the family wrote the name Hoyt. On 13 July 1794 he married Phebe Ruff, a daughter of John Rough, at the South Salem Presbyterian Church in Westchester County. He served in the 1st New York Militia in the War of 1812. Five children are known: Amanda, Nelson, Joel Albert, Ambrose and Permelia, born between 1802 and 1813. The family moved to the Clarion River country of western Pennsylvania, and Benjamin died at Clarington on 28 August 1843, aged 73 years, 6 months and 11 days. He and Phebe lie in a small family burying ground there, under a modern government stone that reads BENJAMIN HAIGHT, 1 NY MILITIA, WAR OF 1812, DEC 24 1769, AUG 28 1843, and on the back face, PHOEBE RUFF HAIGHT, born 1776 Salem NY, died Jan 18 1849 Sigel PA. Two of his sons, Joel and Ambrose, were grandfathers of the cousins Harry Robert Haight and Anna Esther Haight, who married each other.
