Joel Albert Haight
Joel Albert Haight was born in 1810 in New York, a son of Benjamin Haight and Phebe Ruff of South Salem in Westchester County. The family, who had written the name Hoyt in earlier generations, came west into the Clarion River country of Pennsylvania, where his parents are buried at Sigel. On 14 January 1841 he married Rebecca Ann Stewart, a daughter of Hugh Stewart, a militiaman of the War of 1812, and Anne Steele. The census of 2 November 1850 found him farming in Union Township, Jefferson County: Joel, 40, born New York, Rebecca, 26, and the children David, 8, Wesley, 6, Phoebe, 5, Jackson, 3, and Benjamin, one month old. Rebecca died on 19 May 1859.
In old age he followed his son Wesley to the Nebraska frontier. The state census of 10 June 1885 lists him at 75 in the household of J. W. Haight, 42, a farmer with a lame shoulder, in Kirkwood precinct, Brown County, with Wesley's wife Hannah and four boys born in Minnesota. He died there on 12 May 1886. His son David Wakefield Haight, the Civil War soldier, stayed at Clarington.
