Benjamin Holmes
The Ohio certificate of death for his daughter Martha Hille, filed at Cincinnati on 18 February 1914, gives her father as Benj. Holmes and his birthplace as England.
The 1850 census has him in Ward Ten of Cincinnati, aged fifty one and born in England, with his wife Matilda and seven children: Alfred, Elizabeth, Martha, Benjamin, William, Matilda and George. Alfred, the eldest, was born in England about 1831 and Elizabeth in Ohio about 1836, so the family crossed between those years.
Two things make the name safe rather than a guess. The surname Holmes for Martha also comes from a completely separate document, the 1937 death certificate of her daughter Jennie, filed twenty three years later by a different family and a different clerk. Two documents a generation apart, agreeing on a surname nobody had a reason to invent, is about as good as a nineteenth century maiden name gets.
And the 1880 census of Cincinnati, taken while Martha was alive to answer it, records both her parents as born in England. The certificate says England for him and England for her mother. The census and the certificate were filled in thirty four years apart and agree.
The FamilySearch index reads the hand as Hohner. The image does not support it: the letters after Benj. are H, o, l, m, e, s with a flourish, and two other documents say Holmes.
He was in Cincinnati by about 1838, when Martha was born there, which puts him among the English rather than the German arrivals in a city that is remembered for the Germans.
