Martha Holmes married William Hille at Hamilton County on 14 July 1857. Her daughter Virginia Ella was born at Cincinnati three years later.
Her parents came from England. The 1880 census of Cincinnati has her at forty one, widowed, keeping house, with Wallace at fourteen and William at sixteen, and it gives her father's birthplace as England and her mother's as England. She was born at Cincinnati on 5 August 1838, so the Holmeses were in the city before 1840.
Four documents give her three names. The 1857 marriage return says Martha. The 1870 census says Margaret. The 1880 census says Martha. Her son Wallace's 1941 death certificate says Mary. Every one of them is an M name and the two that carry a surname both say Holmes, so the woman is not in doubt and the clerks are.
She died at 1521 Linn Street, Cincinnati, on 15 February 1914, aged seventy five, and was buried at Wesleyan Cemetery.
