Benjamin Piatt
Benjamin Piatt was born in Virginia in 1763, according to the 1900 history of Adams County, Ohio. He married Polly Waddle in Virginia. The history says he came to Adams County in 1810 and bought land in Tiffin Township, the township around West Union. A Ben Piatt is among the signers of a petition for a county road in about 1801, so he may have arrived earlier.
The history lists him among the old soldiers of the county. It says he served as a first lieutenant under General McCullough and drew a pension. It names his six children: Jacob, who married Polly Trotter; John, who married Hester Black; Benjamin, who married Myra Bayless; Margaret, who married Newton Denning; Elizabeth, who married Lewis Trotter; and Polly, who married John Black.
He died in 1851. The history gives his age as ninety-eight, which does not fit a birth in 1763. He was buried near West Union, "probably in the Trotter Cemetery," and "no stone marks his grave." In 1898 his son Benjamin was still living near West Union, and his daughter Margaret Denning near Stone Chapel.
