Benjamin Piatt Jr.
Benjamin Piatt Jr. was born in 1814 in Ohio. The 1900 history of Adams County names him as a son of Benjamin Piatt, who came from Virginia and bought land in Tiffin Township in 1810, and of Polly Waddle. It says he "married Myra Bayless." She was Elmira Bayless, born on 5 December 1825.
They farmed in Tiffin Township, the township around West Union. Their children included Martha Francis (1849), Polly Ann (1851), Jackson Pierce, called Jack (1852), Hannah (1856), Belle, Betsy, Luella (1864) and Benjamin Dickey (about 1866). The death certificates of Jack and Hannah, in the twentieth century, name their parents as Benjamin Piatt and Almyra Bayless, and Benjamin Piatt and Myrtle Bayless.
In 1880 the census found Benjamin, 64, in Tiffin Township with his wife, 56, their daughters Belle, Betsy and Luella and their son Benjamin Dickey. A grandson, Jackson Piatt, four, was also in the house. The enumerator wrote the wife's name as Leina and gave both of Benjamin's parents as born in Pennsylvania.
In 1883 his daughter Luella married John Marion Francis, a widower of the county. Benjamin Piatt Jr. died on 22 March 1899 and was buried in Nixon Chapel Cemetery in Tiffin Township. Elmira lived until 1902 and lies there too.
