Benjamin T. Moody was born in 1787 in North Carolina, a son of William Moody Jr. and Barbary, his wife, who had been the widow Bryan. A Moody family Bible gives his birth year and his sister Nancy's as the same, 1787. The family moved south to Georgia.

In 1809 he married Jane Osgood, born in North Carolina in 1788. They lived in Telfair County, Georgia, where Benjamin was drawn for the grand jury after the first recorded Superior Court, held on 13 April 1810. His brother Samuel sat on the petit jury list at the same court.

In January 1814 he was one of the American settlers in the District of Elotchaway, on the Alachua prairie of Spanish East Florida, who petitioned Congress to admit them to the Union.

Benjamin and Jane had four children, all born in Georgia: Nathaniel E. in 1810, Zilla Ann in 1813, Joel A. in 1814 and Mary S. in 1815. Zilla Ann married Robert Hendry in Liberty County in 1835. Her uncle Hugh Williams, husband of Benjamin's sister Nancy, witnessed the marriage.

Family tradition says Benjamin and Jane Moody were killed by Indians at a place called Facil, in Hamilton County, Florida. The date is not known, and no record of the killing has been found.
