Zilla Ann Moody was born on 12 January 1813 in Telfair County, Georgia. Her parents were Benjamin T. Moody and Jane Osgood, who had married in 1809. Her brothers and sister were Nathaniel E., born in 1810, Joel A., born in 1814, and Mary S., born in 1815. The family Bible of a Moody cousin preserves these dates.

Her parents took part in the Patriot War settlement in Spanish East Florida. In January 1814, when Zilla was a year old, her father signed a petition from the "District of Elotchaway in the Republic of East Florida" asking the United States Congress to admit the settlement to the Union. Family tradition says Benjamin and Jane Moody were later killed by Indians at a place called Facil, in Hamilton County, Florida.

On 12 April 1835, at the Taylors Creek Methodist Church in Liberty County, Georgia, she married Robert Hendry, two years her junior. Her uncle Hugh Williams was one of the witnesses. They lived in Georgia until 1848, then near Jasper in Hamilton County, Florida, where she appears in the 1860 census as "Zilphia." In December 1861 they moved south to Fort Green, in Manatee County, and homesteaded on Payne's Creek. They were Methodists and went to the camp meetings at Fort Meade.

She bore seven children: John Wright in 1836, William Francis in 1838, James Madison, called Boss, in 1839, Ellen Catherine in 1842, Amanda in 1843, Charles F. in 1846 and Robert Calvin, called Cab, in 1849. William drowned in the Alapaha River about 1855 and Amanda died about 1857.

Smallpox struck the Fort Green settlement in the winter of 1862 to 1863. Zilla Ann died on 16 January 1863, aged fifty. Her husband died eighteen days later. They are buried at Fort Green Baptist Cemetery. Cab, her youngest, was thirteen.
